A lot of the time, the guitar is just playing 2 or 3 notes, usually those which have a strong relevance to the tonic of the song and also overlap other chords. The Kool & the Gang song sounds as if the guitar is just playing octaves on the tonic. Pretty boring.

Matt, here's the best memory price right now, however there is ALWAYS memory going on sale. If you follow Slickdeals I guarantee you'll see at least one link for a cheap memory chip that will fit your computer. Just look for PC2-5300 or PC2-5400 and you should be fine. I read that 5400 was basically the same (is that true?) thing and manufacturers are using it to make their memory look better (Terminator 1000 being better than the T-101 and all).

That Version Was Awesome

I'm not sure why some bands just sound SO much cooler live. It wasn't cleaner, but man, those horns were killing it. When they brought the song back with a minute left, that was awesome.

Carl: Question about funk guitar. A lot of times, the guitar is playing one chord the entire time, while the keys and the bass are changing chords. What is the guitar doing? Are they actually playing one note, or maybe just two?

Let's not bring up the OSU-Florida game from last year. Also, let's just not talk shit about Ohio State. They will be beating Michigan starting in 7.5 hours, and if they win, it will be their 4th in a row, which is the most times OSU has ever beat Michigan in a row in 104 years.

Also, it makes absolutely no sense that suddenly they are ranked #7 when they've killed everyone all season and had one loss to Illinois. Why does it not hurt teams to lose in the beginning of the season, but if they lose later, they're f'd? HOW is OU ranked above them when they lost to CU, and OSU lost to a much better team?

Ohio State's going to the Rose Bowl, unless the top 6 lose, and I think only West Virginia has the potential of losing tomorrow. I hate everything.

Football Game?

So since my time is limited in Colorado, I managed to convince Matt to come to the football game with me. Friday is the one day I can guarantee I'll be in Boulder and hanging out. Other than that, I'll do my best, but my entire family, brothers and nephews are in town, so I'll mostly be with them. So knowing that, I offer that if you want to join us in a big group at the CU-Nebraska game, come along. I warn you though, its early, like 10am early.

Anyway, if you want to come here's the price info (Matt, this is also for you to tell people):

If 4 people want to go, and you want to be damn sure you have a ticket, there's a sale going on for 4 tickets for $100. That's a pretty good price.

The other option which worked out well for me last time, is get tickets at the game. I ran into the Coors Light RV and they gave me three free tickets because they were giving a bunch out. Also I'm sure scalpers will be around. Moreso, I don't think this game will sell out, however I'm not entirely convinced.

Yet another option, is see if any students aren't going to the game, like Mike and see if he can get a student ticket for you.

Maybe you can meet us afterwards, but that's where we'll be Friday.

Mascots

These are supposed to be the least intimidating, possibly lamest mascots on this list.

Instead they've basically put down the best mascots. These are EXACTLY what I look for in a mascot. Who the fuck cares that your mascot is The Tigers or oh god, the worst The Wildcats, or The [INSERT BIG JUNGLE CATS].

I may hate Ohio State, but it is awesome that their mascot is a buckeye, those chestnut things that fell out of the tree in our front yard.

My favorite though is DEFINITELY Big Red. I mean look at him! He's just a big red furry mouth! Apparently the guys inside the costume are always incredible because he's always one of the top mascots every single year. If I ever started a school, I would refuse to have my mascot be anything boring. And if it was something like the Tigers, it had better because Tigers are indigenous to the campus.

I'm rooting for Oregon, but they're 80 miles away. This college football season has been no question the best in years (not that I have too much perspective, but hey). There have been SO many #2 teams losing to way lower ranked teams. A huge amount of teams have had strong chances to be #1 or #2 and tons of been destroyed. This is such a welcome relief to last years lame Ohio State being #1 all year just to blow it at the end.

I'm guessing none of you are going to the CU-Nebraska game?

Just Got It Yesterday

I got one star and then went out but it was crazy. I loved how it looked like there was a pit, but no problem, gravity will help me. Sure enough I just walked over the edge and was still upright. I also liked how I was turning my head to keep myself oriented. It reminds me of Ender's Game. "Remember the gate is always down!"

Mario Galaxy is the Best Game!

Honestly, this is the next iteration in gameplay as an artform. Mario 1 was an astonishing game for its time, and has defined almost every game to follow it. Mario 2 wasn't actually made by the same people (it was a port of a Japanese game because they thought Americans were too wussy to handle "The Lost Levels") so it doesn't count. Mario three, however, made a huge leap from Mario one with the maps, suits, secrets, two-player modes, etc. Super Mario built upon Mario 3, but only through taking advantage of the new, more elaborate hardware of the Super Nintendo. It ran smoother, but made few innovations to the platforming genre itself. Mario 64 began anew by making the first truly 3-D platforming game. Mario Sunshine, though, again failed to reinvent the genre as it was just a more polished version of Mario 64.

Super Mario Galaxy is the true successor of Mario 1, Mario 3, and Mario 64. It is the beginning of a new level for video games, and it kicks much ass. The two player mode seems interesting, I think Lindy will dig it.

16 oz Cans - Tall Boys

You know how you sometimes see those cool 16 oz cans that people call tall boys? Those are everywhere here and they are the cheapest form of beer. You can get 2 6-packs of tall boys and they are cheaper than a normal 12pk. I love it.

IMAP Folders

(This refers to your mail program, like Outlook, or well...Mail. none of this refers to the webmail interface)

These are the folders you subscribe to: Inbox, All Mail, Drafts, Sent Mail, Spam, Starred, Trash, any other labels you make

When you get an email, send an email, anything it goes to your "All Mail" folder. When you get something in your in inbox, its still in the "All Mail" folder, there's just a copy of it in the Inbox. Deleting mail from your inbox is essentially hitting the archive button. The only way to delete mail through IMAP is to put it into the Trash folder and then delete it. If something is Spam, you put it in the Spam folder, which is just the same as hitting Report Spam.

This lays it out perfectly.

One thing I like is that I added a label on Gmail called To do and made a filter that if a mail ever comes with "Todo:" in it, give it that label. That way if I need to remember something, I can email myself with "Todo: [message]" in the subject and it will go into that folder. So basically, a label equals a folder.


Since I use Gmail at work, I used to get annoyed coming home and Mail telling me I had 15 new messages, all of which I had already read. Now it downloads those messages, marks them as read and doesn't trick me.

IMAP

I was looking for a different setting a few days ago when I stumbled upon the IMAP feature. I was surprised to see it and I was wondering how long it had been out for. 

Did you have any trouble going from POP to IMAP? The one thing I really like about accessing mail with POP is that it does leave it on the server forever in case I forget to save an email. Can you still do that with IMAP?

Gmail has IMAP

Its been out for a week or two now, but definitely take advantage of it if you're a gmail user. I switched from POP to IMAP and I'm finding lots of really cool things. At the very least, its nice when you use your mail client and instead of loading all the mail you've already read and telling you that its new, it knows that you've already read them.

Does that matter for .m4a's?

I thought that only mattered for m4p's, the protected files.

iTunes

Just to be clear, your new iTunes needs to be authorized to play files from your old account. For example, if you had an account named mattocasio1 then your new iTunes needs to be authorized to play files that mattocasio1 owns. It's sounds to me like maybe you created a new account like mattocasio2 and are expecting iTunes to import songs that mattocasio1 owns. Let me know if I'm totally wrong and we'll go from there.

Carl, that article is outdated as well. As of roughly two weeks ago new MacBook Pros and MacBooks can hold and address 4 GB of memory.

But WHY THE FUCK can't I import my .m4a files from my external hard drive from my old iTunes into my new iTunes on my new computer???!!! I'm about to go insane. MacBook Memory

That was the wrong article. That article was for the MacBook Pro, not the MacBook. The MacBook Pro can HOLD 4 GB, but only 3.3 is active. The MacBook can only hold 2 GB total. I assume all is active.

I don't know what the return policy is, but give it a try. Unless you're going to be running all of the Adobe products at once, though, I think 3 GB is definitely plenty. You can check how much memory you're actually using by running Activity Monitor in the utilities folder.

Memory answer

Matt, I don't think your MacBook supports 4 GB of RAM but here's the easiest way to check. Open up Apple System Profiler and look up the "Bus Speed" statistic. If it says 667 MHz your computer only supports 3 GB; if it says 800 MHz your computer supports 4 GB. If I am correctly remembering when you got your MacBook, I think you missed out by a just a couple days.

It has nothing to do with what version of the OS you're running. I'll spare you the details, but it's a limitation of the actual chipset that is the brain of your computer. 

Parallels is Easy

I wanted to try it, and it worked! It was really easy to install Windows and I'm typing this entry from it. It connects all the networking, your desktop and files, and everything else. So if someone ever needs you to run a windows file, don't fret, Parallels is really easy. Here's a picture.

I'm pretty surprised they ditched Luigi. Game and Watch was fun but not that popular, however I knew tons of people who played as Luigi.

Another computer question.

I can't seem to find a conclusive answer, so I'll ask the gurus. Does Leopard enable my macbook to run 4gb of RAM? Some places say yes, some say no. Some say you have to have a particular chipset (Santa Rosa?). How can I tell if I can run 4gb of RAM, because that'd be pretty swell.

Simpler is Better (if its involving money for you)

If this is involving your comics or writing or anything that you are showing to people to get paid, I would say keep it simple. If they need to bookmark it to remember it, that may be too complicated. Example, I would have kept trying Mattstravaganza with two t's. You know how people are with the internet, if you can't get it in 30 seconds, you stop caring. Also, you could buy a few domains. They really don't cost much, so you could buy a few and point them at the same place. That way if you want Matstravaganza, you could also get a few others to refer to. 

Internet Question

So I've been doing a bit of research about a domain name for my bad self. Now that I got a .mac account and am soon to be publishing work, I'd like to get a website up and running. It will be called (unless anyone else can think of something better, I'm open to suggestions) Matstravaganza. I have storage and all that with .mac, but they give you a ridiculous address for everything. You can, though, use your own domain name if you have one.

I was wondering, aside from any general internet pointers, is if there really is any difference between which top-level domain names I use, and whom I get it from. Godaddy.com seems to have fair deals and have been around for long enough that I won't have to switch ever. And from what I've read, it doesn't seem to really matter if I go with .com .org .net .info or whatever else. Is the general rule to go with .com because it is the most recognizable? I throw myself at the mercy of the gods of internet!
