if you add "&fmt=18" after the url on any youtube video it vastly increases the resolution of the video

I don't get it.

Listen up, boys.

According to a spam e-mail that I got today and happened to open (the subject of which was "Most Beautiful Juggies in the World," so obviously I thought it was legit):

"You will never feel so good ever in your life until you grow your pecker."

Also, Bonnie, I will be there unless something weird happens. I am excited to see the new paintings!

Adobe

That probably means that the document you are trying to copy is copyrighted and can't be manipulated. Look for ways past that online?

Help with Adobe Acrobat

I need help.
Isn't there a way to manipulate text in a .pdf document? Actually, what I need to do is copy and paste sections of a .pdf document into a Word document, and be able to manipulate that text. I feel like I've definitely done this before, but I can't figure out how.
I tried saving the whole thing as a .txt document, but it came up blank. I also tried to save it as a .doc document, but I wasn't able to manipulate the text in that.
Help. I want to be super employee and no one can figure it out.

Ben Gibbard's voice?

I don't know that anyone here cares about or likes Death Cab for Cutie, but I have a question for more musicy people about their new album that dropped last week. In several songs he uses some sort of effect on his voice making it sound all ghosty or weird. However, in a some songs, "Bixby Canyon Bridge" (which is brilliant and sets out the whole theme for this album of grown up, disenchanted, and realistic [finally] Ben Gibbard lyrics) and "Cath," in particular sound like he might be using a voice box thingy for correction. Could this be true? Or maybe it's just some sort of effect. I was wondering if any of you have heard it or know what I'm talking about?

I have to ride my bike to my new garden! Woot.

Good Job, Google

I always knew Lieberman was a Nazi, but damn:

The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee today asked Google, the parent company of the popular online video-sharing site, YouTube, to "immediately remove content produced by Islamist terrorist organizations" from YouTube and prevent similar content from reappearing. However, the company immediately refused to comply with his request.

Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) made the request in a letter to Eric Schmidt, the chairman of the board and chief executive officer at Google, in which he said that YouTube "unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive and amplified voice despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities."

Lieberman asked the company not only to remove existing content but also identify changes that Google plans to make to YouTube’s community guidelines and explain how it plans to enforce the guidelines. Lieberman said removing such content should be "a straightforward task since so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons identifying their provenance."

Fortunately, Google has some balls:

"While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view," the company said. "We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate, we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds."

Creepy things are going down. Here's a nice McCarthyist bill that apparently passed the house with bipartisan support. And here's a nice report by Lieberman about why we should censor the fuck out of anything and everything.

Enjoy.

GNO APB

Hey all Guys, there is a GNO in celebration of Willie in the Beach tonight at 8 at my place. If you want to be a part, just holla at a homie. Right now it is Logan, John, Willie and myself, so while we have a perfect group for Mario Kart, we wouldn't particularly mind your company. Also, if and when Ladies Night breaks up, it is entirely likely that we'll need girls to cook for Guys Night Out (actually we'll probably order food, but you can come and reheat it).

Woah.....

The Beta Nightclub is so fucking nice....holy shit

Canceling out California...

While that's all fine and dandy, after tonight's Lost episode there will be a week off before the 2 hour finale-finale. That is just the pits. WHY!!!!! This erases all progress that the courts gained today.

California

Cheers to the California Supreme Court. "To the extent the current California statutory provisions limit marriage to opposite-sex couples, these statutes are unconstitutional."

One of my personal favs

John, God-damn it......John

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Come on, what's everyone's favorite song?

David Byrne

is a badass.

Thursday

I would go to the show, but I have a fancy dinner at MacKenzie's that's free... and I don't pass up free things. I've never been to a techno show, though, so let me know the next time there's one that's actually good.

And for the record, my favorite is OK Computer, by any band. The Bends is second. I do really like In Rainbows but it'll take a while before it could possibly match either of those two because I have a lot of history with them... we've been through good and bad, happiness and sorrow.

Carl

Good for you...I'm actually listening to Kid A right now. Overall, I like and listen to the later Radiohead albums more than the earlier ones.

Let me know if you want to come.

Also, stop shacking up with your GF and hang out. That is an order. (She should come too)

Armin

I was thinking about it. Ty might come, too.

PS. For those of you keeping score, Kid A is my fav

And the fun starts again...

Check out Things Younger than McCain, with a nice sinister tone,

AND

As long as it's campaign season, why not analyze McCain's Typeface, there are some interesting correlations drawn, good for a few chuckles.
By 'everyone's favorite,' I mean 99% of the population. So what's everyone's very favorite song by any band? Mine is "Sound of Baby Getting Hit in the Face With an Axe" by John Fornander. Tell me so I can make a CD with everyone's favorite songs.

Speaking of shows

Ani and I are going to go to the Armin Van Buuren show at the Beta Nightclub on Thursday. Tickets are 25$.

Armin is my favorite dj and has been voted the #1 dj in the world recently (that's right...better than Oakenfold).

Anyone interested in going? Carl, Logan?

You speak for yourself, Drew.

Bonnie has told me many times she hates shows and thinks they're boring.

What does everyone think of Derren Brown?

Check this: one

and this one

I'm pretty impressed.

The Faint and Radiohead

Bonnie and I don't hate shows, we just hate the price.

BTW, speak for yourself about OK Computer as your favorite. The Bends is also my favorite.

Me, me, me!

I bet Bonnie would, too.
(the faint)
Oh, except Bonnie hates shows.

Speaking of New Music

The Faint is going on tour soon for their new album. They'll be at the Ogden on July 29th (for Josh, they'll be in Portland on August 3rd). Anyone care to go?

Sunday, May 11, 2008

I'm not sure the new E6 album is that good. I only enjoy three of the songs. My favorite Radiohead is still OK Computer like everyone else. The new Nine Inch Nails is very good too. I agree that it's retarded to review an album based on one listen.

Pitchfork IS Horrible

Usually, something that someone describes as pretentious is probably misunderstood or just a little critical, but Pitchfork really is horrible. I'll admit that when I started hated them when they gave the Anniversary album I really like a 1 or a 2 out of ten because the dude had an upset stomach when he reviewed. He even admitted that he admitted that he only listened to it once. God damn, I hate that site. Worst music people on the planet. Hell, unless its Radiohead, usually when they rate an album above a 9 I hate it (that's right I really hate the Fiery Furnaces).

I'll reply to the rest in a little. I was just excited to see that someone else despises Pitchfork.

EDIT: I also agree that the new Radiohead is deceptively good. I listened to it and it didn't really catch me, but at the same time I wanted to listen to it more. I still like The Bends the best, but it is an awesome album.

Does anyone else enjoy the new Electric Six album?

Logan

Glad you asked; now I can rant.

1: Pitchfork Media is a horrible review website. They are overly pretentious and fond of using empty phrases.

2: In any case, the new album is somewhat interesting but choppy. As an album it sort of fails...the songs don't fit together well and some songs seem way too short, others way too long. They seem to be trying to channel Trent Reznor a lot of time with their industrial sounds, which I'm not really into.

Nonetheless, you can't go wrong with Beth Gibbon's voice....further a few of the songs are excellent singles in-themselves.

3/5....not worth buying but worth a listen.

--

3: If you like Portis Head though, you should check out Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man's Out of Season. It is one of those lost albums that people don't really know about. It is not trip-hop but an excellent harmonic album.

5/5

4: I have both of these. If you want to get on AIM sometime, I can send them your way.

5: Last thing: if you haven't heard the new Radiohead album (both discs) then you should be promptly shot. It is by far the best album since....ever. Seriously...it might be better than Ok Computer.

Dustin

What's the deal with a new Portishead album that just got released? Is it actually any good?

Depressed?

Welcome back Kevin

You still in the Springs?

Thanks for the posts...I like the diagram-blog a lot.

I don't know that much about what exactly I will be doing (lab bitch probably). My boss is trying to insert cancer genes into stem cells to make them grow exponentially....and then use enzymes to remove the cancer genes afterwards. This would allow an easy way to mass produce stem cells if successful.

Crazy/cool

This blog just made my day!

Thank goodness public school taught me ven diagrams and basic charting...

A funny video I came across

for my marketing job on table speeches

Hockey & Star Trek

Ok, I haven't been here in a while so I thought I'd add some youtube awesomeness. WARNING: THIS FIRST VIDEO IS NOT TAME. YOU DON'T LIKE BLOOD? DON'T WATCH...but don't worry, no one dies.

"Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight, with nine fainting and two suffering heart attacks while three teammates vomited on the ice. Local television cameras covering the game cut away from the sight of Malarchuk after realizing what had happened."

This next one is much more light-hearted...and its the shit.

He sometimes has interesting things to say and it's always good to hear different ideas, but he's by no means a bad-ass. Lately he's said some really stupid things about Obama's "elitism" and campaign in general.
You mean the same David Brooks that pushed the idea that we'd be greeted as liberators?
