I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not picking between the lesser of two assholes. I'm genuinely excited about Obama. That said, I'm all about compromise and that's what Obama is to me; an exciting compromise.

Kim
Thanks for the pic of Octavian and Bond
And yes Kim, I am proud of you.
Carl: Don't get me wrong, I really like Obama a lot...and I think he is actually more radical than he is letting on judging by that site I linked to...which would be sweet.

Yeah
I just wish we could have put up a more socialist candidate who liked corn less, had smaller ears, and had more muscles.
Compromise? Seriously?
John + Dustin,
I don't mean to be a relativist (or, god forbid, an optimist) -- and certainly you have every right to your opinions -- but seriously, after 8 years of Bush I think the fact that Obama is going to win on Tuesday is pretty fucking remarkable. :) Smiley face!
So, Obama might not be your soul mate, but anyone who wants a chance at being electing president is going to have to compromise their own beliefs and behaviors to get the votes. Pandering is part of the job, though often detrimental.
The McCain/Palin ticket is the perfect example of this detriment. Since the rise of the evangelical demographic, the GOP anymore is composed of two mostly-unrelated groups: Christians and Capitalists -- the only common thread being the hatred of Democrats. They need each other if they want a chance. Karl Rove understood this, and reached out to get the evangelical vote -- George H. W. Bush did not, and was a 1-term president.
Increasingly, this trend is weakening the GOP at the same time. This is why Colorado has shifted from a red state to a blue state -- a rift occurred between the social conservatives and fiscal conservatives in the 90's and the Dems filled the vacuum. Salazar, Ritter, Udall, etc.
It will be interesting to see how the GOP transforms over the next few years. Who knows -- they could even split into two different parties!
Obama signifies a really pivotal time in American politics -- probably the most significant shift since Reagan.

Today I voted for Barack Obama.
Aren't you proud of me? When we all first met I was a registered republican. Now I feel ashamed of that, but am proud of myself now. I also voted for Kerry in the last election, but this is irrelevant now.

Colorado, Serious Business
Just got an E mail that Barack and Michelle will be back in Colorado in Pueblo on Saturday. This is a smart thing to do. As most of you know, the only way McCain can win is if some massive national event tilts a huge number of votes in his direction all over the USA. In that case, the "firewall" states that Obama would have the best chance of holding and still winning the election are Virginia and Colorado. I like that hes playing it safe and making sure he has the tipping point states of this election locked down.
Also, what John and Dustin said...yes.

WOAH NOW
Here's a note that I made on Facebook. (And for the record, it did feel weird to make a note on Facebook. It's some random untra-personal message in the guise of something-only-slightly-more-than-a-journal-entry.) I repost it here just because it deals directly with one of Dustin's points, and I think it's a quote from Obama that promises a brighter future.
"I've heard more often than not that people like Obama (obviously), but don't think he is going to actually work for substantive change. He'll clean up after Bush, but won't clean up the rest of the mess in America. To that, I present the most fascinating quote from him that I've heard yet. Responding to Jesse Jackson's claim that he wasn't as involved in the Jena marches as he should have been, as a prominent black politician, Obama had this to say in an address at Howard University...
In other news, if Yelle comes through your town, go see them.

Responding to Jesse Jackson's claim that he wasn't as involved in the Jena marches as he should have been, as a prominent black politician, Obama had this to say in an address at Howard University...
"When I’m president, we will no longer accept the false choice between being tough on crime and vigilant in our pursuit of justice. Dr. King said: “It’s not either/or, it’s both/and.” We can have a crime policy that’s both tough and smart. If you’re convicted of a crime involving drugs, of course you should be punished. But let’s not make the punishment for crack cocaine that much more severe than the punishment for powder cocaine when the real difference between the two is the skin color of the people using them. Judges think that’s wrong. Republicans think that’s wrong, Democrats think that’s wrong, and yet it’s been approved by Republican and Democratic presidents because no one has been willing to brave the politics and make it right. That will end when I am president."
In other news, if Yelle comes through your town, go see them.
I think Obama's a good compromise for the liberal and moderate sides of the Democratic Party. I'd say it's pretty remarkable how little infighting there's been since the primary. Obama's done what he's needed to do to get elected. Obviously, ethanol was purely political. I don't know what he really thinks about gay marriage, but by not supporting it, he keeps the focus on more important issues. And good luck getting this country to elect a black man who openly wants to legalize drugs and go soft on crime. I disagree with Obama on at least twice as many issues as you gave, but I'm more than willing to compromise.

Obama
While I really like Obama (he is genuine, smart, funny, and seems to truly care) I still have some beef.
1: He supports Ethanol subsidies and agricultural subsidies in general
2: He hasn't talked about our broken prison system at all
3: He hasn't talked about the bullshit of the "war on terror" and the "war on drugs". He doesn't have to be extreme at all (legalization, we should stop fucking with other countries) but just address them
-He did admit he smoked pot and did coke. That's cool.
4: He supports the death penalty
5: He opposes gay marriage (but likes civil unions so this isn't a biggie)
6: He is a Christian (ha!)
- Although he did say that "In hard times, people take refuge in traditions, God & guns" which I liked.
But seriously though....take a look at this shit: Obama on the issues . I agree with him 90% and that is pretty amazing.
Alright fuck it: GO OBAMA!!!!!

I've noticed that even the most cynical of lefties (Matt Taibbi, my cousins) can't find a reason to fault Obama for anything. My dad has been glowing ever since he got to hug Michelle today. She gave a speech in downtown C-Springs. I forgot to ask him if he got to cop a feel. I'll assume he did. Anyways, I've never done so much for a campaign before, and I might never again.
As for the Zogby pollsters, I've done quite a bit of phone banking over the last few months and know how shitty that job is. However, I still think it's best to be rude to them. If they sound foreign, use that to make fun of them. Bring their mother into the conversation. Most of these people are losers and don't expect any better.

Obama with babies
I have a variation of this pic on my desktop at work. In mine, the kid is smiling even cuter, and there are two black women to the right; one is smiling the the other has her hand on her chest and seems about to tear up. It's a really, really good picture.
Also, my site 538 isn't just for stat-nerds. The pro-poker-player who writes the grassroot comparison pieces does good stuff. The end of his latest article is just so honest... I don't recall an election touching this many people in such an emotional way...apart from pure hatred toward Bush.

Zogby Calls My Cell
So I got a call on my cell from an unlisted number and it is some lady polling for Zogby. Since I figured it was pretty rare for us cell-only yuppies to get represented in these thingies, I answered all the questions...it started out normal....
Myself: "Democrat...Obama.....already voted....progressive....atheist....white collar....50,000-79,999....large city"
And then the weird questions started...
Lady: "Would you consider yourself a NASCAR fan?"
Me: "LOL, no"
Lady: "How important do you feel WWII was to our national interests? Very, Somewhat, Not very, or Not at all?"
Me: "WWII!?! ....I'm gunna go with very"
After that they asked about how important I felt military experience was for a Presidential candidate, and similar questions about Vietnam, Iraq 1990, and Iraq current and how successful I felt we were in each. Is that kinda like push polling?? You tell me.
Anywho, just surprising is all.

Super Awesome Trivia Time
Question: When was the last time a Republican ticket won the Presidential election when it did not include a Bush or Nixon?
Answer: Look it up...I'm sure it will surprise you...
Also, lol @ "Joe the Brother" There's that McCain rage we've all heard about.

Who the hell is Tonya Bledsoe?
I thought she was friending Palmer people, but now she friended me. Did you guys figure out who she is?

Hooray Copper!
Kevin! I got a Copper/Winter Park pass this year so I will be up there most Saturdays with Mike and many Sundays by myself. I ski, not snowboard, but I'm pretty good, and so we must perform our respective winter sports together. This is exciting.
Update and Renewable Breakthroughs
First off, congrats to all on their achievements! It sounds like everyone is headed in their direction full speed.
I have "retired" from cycling, indefinitely. I'm using quotes only because there are two velodromes near Boulder that should be built in the next year, so if that happens then it might be a different story. The one I am hoping for is going to be by the Broomfield Events Center, and will be indoors, which would enable racing and training again. A big reason I retired is because I simply could not stand living in the Springs any longer.
As for my current plans, I will be teaching snowboarding at Copper Mountain from December to April! Basically playing with kids all day in the mountains. So if anyone plans on skiing this winter let me know!
Anyway, here are two big breakthroughs in solar. The coming years will be amazing time for renewable energy, and I believe a fully sustainable energy economy will be a reality in the next two decades, if not sooner.

Hooray indeed!
It seems like good things are happening all over. Lindy, congratulations on the med school. I'm glad you got into CU and I know how much you wanted it. Ben, congrats on your job, it sounds awesome and right up your alley. Although... does this make you a terrorist? Do you hate American freedoms, or love Japanese ones?
I have good news of my own, being that I am now gainfully employed! I'm a Residential Counselor for Cascadia, a non-profit mental health and addictions treatment organization. There are a bunch of different types of facilities all around Portland, and my job is to be the FOG (floating overnight graveyard) and go to whichever facility needs me for the night. I get a call at 4:00 p.m. telling me where to be at 11:00 p.m., then I go home at 7:30 a.m. and sleep until, at the latest, I get the phone call telling me where to go that night. I absolutely love the schedule, the pay is excellent, but the most amazing part of this is that I have plenty of downtime, and my boss doesn't mind what I do during it (so long as I do the work that I need to do, of course). He said that the last guy who had my job watched a lot of movies. So, what this basically means is that I get paid to write! I'll have writing time coming out of my ears between the job itself and my "mornings" before people get off work. Add to this that Oscar got an insanely awesome art director job and everything is looking up.
Anyways, I'm extremely excited about this whole thing as I'm now entirely and legitimately living in Portland! Woo! Go everyone!

My God! Good news!
Lindy! That's AMAZING! CU is such a good medical program, you totally are a rock star. You've been working this whole time. Sheeeet. You RULE!
Frontline! Everyone go watch The Choice 2008, you can stream it, youtube it, or Itune it. It's amazing! It's good!
I have a job too! I work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Yes, it's not for your government. I am a Consular Specialist with the Japanese consulate in Seattle. I will be in America, AND I am a Diplomat. (seriously: my office isn't considered America- it's extraterritorial)
Good news abounds! Congratulations Lindy!

Congrats!
Good werk Lindy. You won't even have to move. Pretty neat.
Also, remember all that talk about "Joe the Plumber"? Well, while Obama was walking around shakin hands in Ohio, some "undecided" dood ("Joe") grills him about how the plumbing business he wanted to buy would make about 250,000 a year (strangely, conveniently close to the exact cut off point) so he'd get taxed, so he can't buy the company. Obama gave a not-so-direct answer to him that included the term "spreading the wealth" so McCain decided to jump all over it during the debate.
Surprise!(he is a registered Republican who voted for McCain in the primaries, isn't a licensed plumber, was never seriously considering having a business, doesn't pay taxes, and probably beats his wife...no, I'm not making this up)
EDIT: Also....this (warning, this is pretty touching)

And then
I actually screamed out loud when I got my acceptance to CU's med school an hour ago. Go me!
My soapbox
I just about screamed when I heard this in the debate last night from McCain: "Just again, the example of the eloquence of Sen. Obama. He's 'health for the mother.' You know, that's been stretched by the pro-abortion movement in America to mean almost anything. That's the extreme pro-abortion position, quote, 'health.'"
It was also just occured to me that it would be hard for us, in light of our blog, to have any republican friends.
No on 48!

My only major disagreement in on Referendum O. It's a good idea, but the way it's implemented will make it harder for citizens groups to pass legislation, while it won't really make a difference to richer special interest groups. Also, I think 53, 55, and 56 aren't on the ballot anymore.
I'll try a link too:

So today I went through the Colorado proposed amendments and made my decisions. In the process I came across this site. Check out the AWESOME fake betting lines they give on the side of the page. And for even more laughs, check out the little disclaimer on the bottom of the betting line graphic. I've never seen anything so stupid on the internet that was not involving Palin for quite some time. Anywho, here's how I'm voting:

Darn Tootin' Debate
I was actually pretty surprised by the whole thing. I thought Biden was going to be awesome, but he was exceptionally awesome. He actually answered all of the questions (and his answer about what the VP actually does gave me a nerdgasm) and didn't fly off topic for seemingly any reason. Comparing the debates only, I'd say that Biden did a better job than even Obama.
Now after seeing some parts of the Couric interview I thought that Palin was going to drool on the podium or something, but she was better than i expected. That isn't, of course, to say that she was really any good. She, unlike Biden, didn't answer almost any questions, and when she "did" it was just gobbledygook. Her answers meandered everywhere and never actually made a point or said anything outside of maybe two responses. Which, as it always goes, is why they get the stupid people vote. Even though Biden spoke with intelligence and conciseness, you have to listen to what he says and follow logic. If you don't want to/can't pay attention to a whole sentence, then Palin is speaking on your level. Also, the amount of times that Biden (and Obama for that matter) had to say "Well, actually that's completely untrue," was sickening. Again, though—stupid vote. The monotremes will believe the lie before they listen to the defense, and categorically dismiss the defense because it's in language from a liberal intellectual elitist. Anti-intellectualism is going to kill this country, which is why the majority of our resources need to go into education—BUY WAR BONDS!

If you're like me, you might be somewhat dissatisfied with the state of America these days. Watch some PBS, or rent a Ken Burns documentary. I'm watching baseball right now (GO CUBS!) and I'm quite pleased with where we came from.
Just looking out for ya.
